N - Formylmorpholine is widely used as a solvent for the extraction of aromatic hydrocarbons from hydrocarbon mixtures in the petroleum refining industry. It has a high selectivity for aromatics. For example, in the extraction of benzene, and xylene (BTX) from reformate or other petroleum fractions, N - Formylmorpholine can effectively separate these valuable aromatic components. The process typically involves counter - current extraction, where the hydrocarbon feedstock and the N - Formylmorpholine solvent flow in opposite directions through a series of extraction columns. The aromatics preferentially dissolve in the N - Formylmorpholine phase, allowing for their separation from non - aromatic components.

Chemical Synthesis Reagent

In organic synthesis, N - Formylmorpholine can be used as a reagent to introduce the formyl group (-CHO) into organic molecules. It can participate in reactions such as the Vilsmeier - Haack reaction. In this reaction, N - Formylmorpholine can react with certain aromatic compounds in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst to form aryl aldehydes. For example, it can be used to synthesize benzaldehyde derivatives from substituted benzenes. The formyl group in N - Formylmorpholine can also be involved in condensation reactions.
