2-Ethylhexanoic acid is an organic fatty acid, a clear and transparent oiled liquid, It is a carboxylic acid and is often used to synthesize lipophilic metal derivatives soluble in non - polar organic solvents. These derivatives serve as catalysts in polymerizations, like tin 2 - ethylhexanoate in poly ( lactic - co - glycolic acid ) production. Industrially, it can be made from propylene. It finds wide applications in sectors such as paints and coatings (e.g., as a paint drier), plastics (for PVC stabilizers and PVB plasticizers), lubricants, and pharmaceuticals.
