Theory
It reacts with amino acids in the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) to form brownish pigments, mimicking a natural tan. The color develops over several hours and typically lasts 3-10 days, depending on the skin's natural exfoliation process.
Uses
Sunless Tanning
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is the main active ingredient in self-tanning lotions and sprays.
Cosmetics
