Diallyl phthalate (DAP) is a colorless or pale yellow transparent liquid. Each molecule contains two allyloxy groups. It is relatively stable at room temperature. However, if an initiator is added under heating conditions, it will possess high reactivity and can be used to produce many new materials for special purposes.

DAP has a wide range of application fields. It can be used as a crosslinking agent and plasticizer for unsaturated resins, an internal plasticizer for PVC resins, and a reinforcing agent for fiber resins. It can polymerize on its own to serve as a plastic strengthening agent and also as an auxiliary crosslinking agent for synthetic rubbers. The main applications are as follows:
Synthesis of Acrylic Resins
It is used in the synthesis of resins with acrylic as the system, such as printing gloss pastes and waterproof adhesives. It helps to improve the adhesion, water resistance, increase the gloss, improve the fluidity and adjust the viscosity of the resins. It can be added dropwise along with other monomers or added later. The disadvantage is that the drying speed of the resin is sometimes slow.
Unsaturated Polyester Resins
In the production and use of unsaturated polyester resins, DAP can be used as a crosslinking agent, an internal plasticizer (reactive plasticizer), a dispersant for dyes and catalysts, and an anti-gelling agent for vinyl monomers such as styrene. As a crosslinking agent, the products obtained by using it have better electrical properties, heat resistance and dimensional stability than those obtained by using styrene as a crosslinking agent. As a dispersant and anti-gelling agent, due to its high stability at room temperature, high boiling point and low volatility, it is difficult to cure at room temperature even with a catalyst and requires heating for curing. Therefore, it can be used to produce premixed or prepreged unsaturated polyester resins and also used in the production of insulating varnishes and hardened woods.
Internal Plasticizer for Polymers
DAP can be used as an internal plasticizer for polymers. For example, when used for the plasticization of polyvinyl chloride, it makes the products have good heat resistance, light resistance, solvent resistance and electrical properties. It is widely used in sealants for automobiles and refrigerators, foamed wallpapers, artificial floors and other aspects. The disadvantage is that its migration is greater than that of DOP.
Self-Polymerizing Polymers
The self-polymerizing polymers (prepolymers) of DAP have good heat resistance, plasticizing, toughening and dispersing properties. They are widely used in molding materials, decorative laminated materials, UV-curable inks, coatings and so on.
